Foundation Art Course

Discover the Artist Within – Level 1

Learning

Art course using drawing media for adults. This is an introductory or refresher course with no previous experience required. Improve your skills learning to see as an artist “sees” through drawing exercises.

Media Art Course

Discover the Artist Within – Level 2

Learning

To help you develop further as a potential artist this course is designed for those who have completed the level 1 course. Learn about Painting and Drawing methods. Increase your media knowledge in the techniques and processes of painting and drawing.

You May Achieve

Increased skills and confidence in various processes of painting and drawing. Improved understanding of media knowledge of painting and drawing. Preparation for the next level to develop the artist within.

Advanced Art Workshop

Develop the Artist Within – Level 3

Learning

How to further develop your knowledge and broaden skills and perceptions. Designed for hobbyists or art students who have studied at the intermediate level of discover the artist within. Challenges are set to encourage the building of ideas to improve conceptual development and encourage the experimental use of media to broaden and develop unique approaches to media.

You May Achieve

You will develop and increase self-expression and perceptual awareness, using a range of media. You will also expand and broaden your skills and perceptions.

You Will Need To Bring Along

The materials you will need to bring along are:
A3 paper or visual diary
Pencils
Charcoal
Scissors
Paper glue
Any art materials you have and prefer to use to make art.

Experimental Drawing

Learning

This course will offer a drawing adventure for the experienced or the brave. There will be lots of different approaches to drawing including a range of media and a variety of subjects.
Drawing is the essential activity of artists that needs to be nurtured.
Discover new ways of thinking about mark making and new combinations of drawing materials. Experience mark-making in the environment, thinking about permanence and impermanence. Work on horizontal and vertical surfaces and on other ‘found’ surfaces.
This is also an opportunity for those who participated in the first course in term 1 to explore new techniques as well as continuing their drawing discipline.

You May Achieve

Develop and experiment with personal mark-making techniques that work for you and enhance your skills.

You Will Need To Bring Along

Essential materials:
Small sketchbook A5
Thick charcoal
Fine marker pen
Black drawing ink
Masking tape
String/wool
Cotton rag
Protective clothing – such as Apron or old shirt.
PLUS…. Any of the following that you have, soft eraser for charcoal,
pastels (chalk and /or oil type), coloured inks, watercolour brushes – various sizes – wide is good! marker pens – various thicknesses, quills – feathers and/or pen and nibs, old envelopes and/or paper bags
Provided materials:
Wax candles and bamboo garden stakes
Large paper and card

Print Making

Learning

This course will introduce the techniques of block printmaking. We will use both traditional and contemporary approaches with lots of experimentation. No experience is needed to enrol, just perhaps curiosity and determination.

Set of Lino cutting tools suggest C – 3 pack (Cavalier $17.29) or equivalent cutters
1 piece of 2 sided Lino (Cavalier 20×30 $13.50) or equivalent lino tile (Cavalier 30×30 lino $10.40)
Permanent Marker pen (fine)
Cutting blade knife (Stanley or another retractable blade knife)
Sketchbook or paper, ruler, eraser, and pencils (for planning)
Please wear protective clothing, e.g., old shirt or apron.
All other equipment and paper/card provided.

Portraiture

Using live models

Learning

In this learning course participants will explore the human face and head using several live models. Initially using drawing materials followed by mixed media options that will be introduced and explored over the length of the learning. This learning is suitable for both experienced artists and student artists at all stages of development.

A stimulating adventure and a learning of focusing on the human face.

You Will Need To Bring Along

Essential Materials
Paper of your own choice, various sizes.
Large Drawing board, A1 or A2 size. Clips to hold paper or masking tape.
Any of the following
Easel, if you have one or you can use a SpringDale easel.
Drawing materials; a selection of pencils, pastels, charcoals, inks, waterpot, markers, and so on
Apron, smock, or old shirt or any form of protective clothing.

Sculpture

Sculpture, clay modelling and building

Learning

This learning course is an introduction to the world of three-dimensional art – sculpture, with a focus on clay modelling skills, exploring the various hand building methods. Create varied sculptures over the four sessions. As a participant you will be encouraged to develop your ideas as skills are acquired.

You May Achieve

This focus on clay modelling processes will offer an adventure and improve and develop further your skills with clay modelling.

You Will Need To Bring Along

Essential
2kg pack air hardening clay (Montmartre or equivalent brand).
Length of fishing line or wire (to cut clay).
Rolling pin or piece of PVC pipe (rolling pin thickness and length).
Plus, any of the following
Plastic sheet to cover table surface.
1 or 2 A4 or A3 size boards (to work on).
Plastic bags, cling wrap (to store clay)
Clay modelling tools or (equivalent implements from kitchen drawer for tools).
Apron, smock, or old shirt. (protective clothing).

Block Print Making

Learning

Study and learn the techniques of block printing. In this learning environment we will use both traditional and contemporary approaches with lots of experimentation. The key ingredient for this course is a student’s own curiosity and determination. This learning resource would be a logical extension for those that took part in the first printing course.

You May Achieve

You will be exposed to techniques of block printing that may develop your artistic skills further.

You Will Need To Bring Along

Sculpture 2

Sculpture carving and construction

Learning

This learning course is an introduction to the world of three-dimensional art – sculpture, with a focus on carving skills and constructing skills, exploring various materials. Create varied sculptures over the four sessions. As a participant you will be encouraged to develop your ideas as skills are acquired.

You May Achieve

Knowledge and skills in carving and construction.

You will need to bring along

A bar of (low or no perfume) soap.
Lino cutting tools, or small sharp kitchen knife.
Other materials for carving will depend on choices made in consultation with Annette at the first session. There are lots of materials suitable to carve.
Plastic sheet to cover table surface.
Materials for constructing will also be determined during the course.
PVA glue and brush.
Apron, smock, or old shirt. (protective clothing)

Drawing 2

Drawing out and about

Learning

This learning course is for the adventurous, whether you are just starting out or have some experience as an artist. Each week, learning will be in a different local space: The Dell beach, Boat Harbour, somewhere in the main street, shopping or industrial areas, and one of the local lakes.
We will take you out and about on four adventures, working in the landscape, in new spaces and in new ways. The Art Studio at SpringDale will be our space if the weather is unsuitable for working on location. A local café could also be an alternative.

You May Achieve

A love and interest in drawing out in a live site environment.

You will need to bring along

Sketchbook A4 or A5
Thick charcoal

Annette Playsted – Bio

Annette Playsted is a seasoned art teacher with 30+ years’ experience as a secondary art teacher and 15 years as a community education art tutor. Annette is a practising artist who has held regular one person art exhibitions since moving to the Bellarine in 2005. Annette is curator of the SpringDale Artists Annual Exhibition and Drysdale Village Medical Centre Foyer Exhibitions. Her supportive and individualized teaching style encourages the development of unique styles and approaches to making art. Her desire is to encourage art making as an enjoyable pastime but also to help each person find a new expressive pathway or career path.

Dr. Gillian Turner – Bio

Gillian is an experienced and award winning art practitioner. As an artist, she embraces new challenges, and continues to be inspired by her first encounter with the west coast of Ireland in 2009. It was there that she developed experimental drawing. Gillian’s practice focuses on conceptual work including installations. As a photographer, she explores mixed media on photographic surfaces, and documents the processes and outcomes of her conceptual art pieces.
Gillian has had solo exhibitions, and worked as an artist in residence in Australia and Ireland. She has been awarded Professional Development grants from the City of Greater Geelong to support her work here and overseas.
Gillian is also an experienced educator and published writer.
