Banjo – Level One

Learning

This is an introduction to playing five-string banjo for complete beginners. Using the ‘Scruggs’ or three-finger picking style which is the basis of bluegrass banjo. This style can also be easily adapted to other genres of music and is a great starting point for exploring the capabilities of this versatile instrument.

You May Achieve

Learning in a supportive, small-group situation (2–5 students) you will be able to develop basic skills in banjo playing.

FYI

Twangy, percussive, spine-tingling – the banjo has a unique sound. In its various forms, it is famous for blazing-fast bluegrass rolls and licks, moody country blues riffs, quirky trad jazz and driving Celtic rhythms.

Banjo – Level Two

Learning

This is a course for banjo players who can play a steady forward roll and manage basic chord changes (G-C-D), but don’t yet have the skills and confidence to take part in a jam. We will be using the ‘Scruggs’ or three-finger picking style which is the basis of bluegrass banjo – and can be adapted to many other genres and styles of music. Learning in a supportive, small-group situation (2–5 students).

You May Achieve

Improving your skills, adding some neat techniques to your repertoire and playing some new chords. And of course, learning a few new tunes!

Banjo – Level Three

Learning

You’ve been picking three-finger banjo for a few months and can play simple tunes in the key of G. You can play the forward roll and the forward-reverse roll. In this course you will be introduced to new rolls, new techniques, new licks, new tunes and the use of a capo. We will be exploring the five-string banjo together in a supportive, small-group context (maximum 5 students).

You May Achieve

Improved timing, intonation and fluency.
The ability to play:
** new rolls (alternating thumb roll, backward roll)
** new techniques (slide, pull-off, hammer-on)
** new licks (G lick, D lick).
An expanded repertoire of tunes. Increased confidence in your playing.

You Will Need To Bring Along

A five-string banjo with a strap, finger picks, thumb pick, electronic tuner, banjo capo, fifth string capo.
All course materials (printed notes) are provided free of charge.

Banjo – Setup

Learning

This learning course is designed to assist you select appropriate strings, change strings, adjust the setup and perform routine cleaning and maintenance. If you prefer bring your own banjo and new light gauge strings of your choice.
Note: A practice banjo. Tools, strings and cleaning materials will be available for the class.
Note 2: Participants must bring their own safety glasses to wear while changing strings.

You May Achieve

The ability to setup your banjo to your needs as well as maintaining your banjo in perfect condition.

Steve Williams – Bio

Steve Williams is a keen amateur musician and member of the Porch Pickers acoustic band. He has been playing five-string banjo for five years.
